A Wonderful week in Amarante, Portugal at the Festa Mundial da Animaçāo (October 26 – 2 November 2021)

Thursday, December 9th, 2021

We just got back from a wonderful trip to Portugal to the Festa Mundial da Animação in Amarante where we squeezed in quite a lot in one week!

1. We did a joint Master class called From Script to Screen the – Beryl Story. Here is us mid – lecture.

2. We were also on a jury to a select the winners of the Portuguese competition.

3. Joanna had a retrospective and showed all the films and also had lots of artwork from all of the films – which the audience loved to see.

4. Joanna also taught a really thorough two day practical workshop called The Noble Art of Drawing Animation on paper which focused on human movement. The students worked really hard and thoroughly enjoyed it! We screened the finished film at the closing night ceremony.

Additionally in the Museu Municipal Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso a beautiful converted monastery in the centre of Amarante there is an exhibition of 72 of Joanna’s drawings called Drawing the Line curated by Pedro Dourado which Joanna opened and talked about with guests. The exhibition is pretty extensive and looks great in the setting of this amazing restored museum and it’s proved to be very popular and might even tour elsewhere in Portugal.

Joanna was particularly elated because simultaneously there is a huge exhibition of paintings by Pedro Almodovar and Jorge Gallindo in the same museum which made her very happy, much happier than when we first met Almodovar at the UK BAFTAS in 2006 which was a total disaster. (see separate story about this to follow one day)

Our great friend producer Phil Davies from his company Astley Baker Davies gave a masterclass on producing the incredibly successful children’s series Peppa Pig which was extremely enlightening – we’ve known Phil from the mid 80’s when we both worked at Middlesex University and Joanna was a student there.

It was a fantastic trip overall and we are greatly indebted to the organizers Casa da Animação of Festa Mundial da Animação, Regina Machado, and in particular our long standing friends Producer, Animator and Educator Abi Feijó and the renowned Animator Regina Pessoa who took great care of us during the whole trip at the Festa and later at the Casa Museu de Vilar their beautiful house and grounds which they share with animator and ex NFB Producer Marcy Page. The casa doubles as their residence and their animation production base and houses Abi’s really fascinating Museum of Animation and Movement which he founded, curates and lectures from – it’s a really intriguing display of artifacts, art work and developing mechanics outlining a concise history of animation and it’s associated technologies.

The girls – Marcy Page, Joanna Quinn and Regina Pessoa.

We met many delightful people – Animators, Lecturers, Journalists and Writers – some names stand out Eliane Gordeeff (who supplied some of these photos). Elsa Cerqueira, Cláudio Roberto Fernando Galrito Jorge Leitão Ramos and Alexandre Siqueira, with whom we spent much of our time especially in the pigeon cafe – yes there are actual pigeons in the cafe.

We hope to return to Portugal in the near future. We thought that the people are wonderfully calm and refined, happy and creative and we adored what they are adored – cod, great bread, delicious eggy deserts and pigeons in cafés.
